Management of bacterial bulb rots in onion is a challenge due to limited efficacy of current disease management strategies. A greenhouse trial was conducted at the Epagri Experimental Station in Ituporanga, SC to evaluate the efficacy of plant defense activators for management of bacterial bulb rot. Ten-week-old seedlings of the cultivar Empasc 352 Bola Precoce were transplanted to beds with sterile soil. Foliar sprays were applied eight times at 7-day intervals, starting at the bulb initiation stage, which occurred approximately 75 days after transplantation. After harvest, the bulbs were cured in the greenhouse for 10 days before being inoculated. A suspension (1x108 CFU/ml) of Burkholderia gladioli pv. alliicola, isolate EPAGRI-Eitb-02, was injected into the upper shoulder of each onion bulb using a hypodermic needle and syringe. Inoculated bulbs were placed in plastic boxes and incubated for 30 days. After the incubation period, bulbs were cut longitudinally and rated for severity of bulb rot. The experiment was arranged in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with four blocks, each block including 20 plants of each treatment. β Aminobutyric acid (0,25g/L), Bion® (0,05g/L) and Agromós® (2,5ml/L) reduced significantly the severity of bacterial rot in onion bulbs by 40, 21 and 13%, respectively, compared to the control treatment. There was no effect of Fegatex®, and Ecolife® on severity of bacterial rot. Products that induce host resistance may be useful for bacterial disease control in onion in an integrated program with standard bactericides.
